Welcome to Hongwanji Mission School
August 14, 2009

We develop our children academically, physically, socially & spiritually through programs guided by Buddhist Values.

Welcome to Hongwanji Mission School.  We are conveniently located in lush Nuuanu Valley, three minutes from downtown Honolulu.  Our curriculum is accredited by Hawaii Association of Independent Schools and Western Association of Schools and Colleges.  We have a student body of about 330 students from preschool through 8 th grade where students receive individualized attention with teacher ratios of less than 18:1.  Our preschool has been named “Best of the Best” in 2006, 2008 and 2009--- from the Honolulu Advertiser.

Our facilities are unique for an elementary and middle school with a computer center, gymnasium, swimming pool, library & cafeteria.  We offer a variety of after school programs ranging from our Fort Gakuen Japanese Language School, to aikido, judo, clay, robotics & swimming.  We participate in the local interscholastic league for volleyball and basketball where both girls and boys from grades 5 – 8 participate.

We were established in 1949, the first Buddhist school outside of Japan.  Affiliated with the Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin, our mission (above) and philosophy are rooted in Buddhist teachings and values.   There is high parent participation in school events in our school and we offer all of our children a values-based education.

+ HMS Winter Programs
___ By: Barbara Ellis & Cari Taira

On Thursday morning, Dec. 17, the children in Preschool through 4th grade presented programs to family and friends. The Preschool and Kindergarten program began with the rockin’ and rollin’ Kindergarten students taking the stage to a “standing room only” crowd. The preschool students were adorable as usual and melted our hearts when they performed “Ponyo” with the assistance of our wonderful Saito Sensei.

The second program featured the 1st through 4th grade students. It began with a lovely two-part song from the combined 3rd and 4th grade students accompanied by 4th grader Susan Hasegawa. The first grade wowed the crowd with their awesome dance moves in “North Pole Rock and Roll.” The second graders showed off their talents and great singing in “Give a Little Love at Christmas.” The third graders got the crowd going with a lively country song including some square dancing. The 4th graders showed off their recorder abilities as well as looking “way cool” in their sunglasses for “Movin’ to the Christmas Beat” choreographed by 4th grade teacher, Noah Harders.

It was a wonderful morning of entertainment and holiday cheer. The children did an outstanding job!

The Middle School Winter Program was held on December 11, 2009. The Social Hall was filled with musical instruments, storytelling, and sounds from the Taiko drums. These students have been practicing all quarter long for this performance. Performances were led by Derrick Yamane (Band), Cari Taira (Drama) and Jay Toyofuku (Taiko). The first time band performers began the program with A Winter’s Sleigh Ride. The Concert Band performed various pieces which included The Merry Christmas Machine and the Theme from Jurrasic Park. The drama students performed plays reminding us about true friendship and the importance of appreciation. The night ended with the exciting sounds and beats from the taiko drums. The younger taiko performers from the fifth and sixth grade performed many pieces which included, Renshu Taiko and Hiryu Sandan Gaeshi. The seventh and eighth grade Taiko group performed Mikoshi Taiko and Yodan Taiko. This was a great way to begin the holiday season. All performers did a wonderful job!
