Welcome to Hongwanji Mission School
October 25, 2008

We develop our children academically, physically, socially & spiritually through programs guided by Buddhist Values.

Welcome to Hongwanji Mission School.  We are conveniently located in lush Nuuanu Valley, three minutes from downtown Honolulu.  Our curriculum is accredited by Hawaii Association of Independent Schools and Western Association of Schools and Colleges.  We have a student body of about 330 students from preschool through 8 th grade where students receive individualized attention with teacher ratios of less than 18:1.  Our preschool has been named “Best of the Best” in 2006 to 2008--- from the Honolulu Advertiser.

Our facilities are unique for an elementary and middle school with a computer center, gymnasium, swimming pool, library & cafeteria.  We offer a variety of after school programs ranging from our Fort Gakuen Japanese Language School, to aikido, judo, clay, robotics & swimming.  We participate in the local interscholastic league for volleyball and basketball where both girls and boys from grades 5 – 8 participate.

We were established in 1949, the first Buddhist school outside of Japan.  Affiliated with the Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin, our mission (above) and philosophy are rooted in Buddhist teachings and values.   There is high parent participation in school events in our school and we offer all of children a value-based education.

+ Student Council News - Welcome Back!
___ Sept. 11, 2008 by David Dacanay

Welcome back HMS students! I hope you enjoyed your summer vacation. Over the summer the student council officers went to the leadership camp.

At the leadership camp the student council officers learned how to do their jobs correctly. The student council officers need to be responsible, keep up with academic work, be good role models, and put their jobs before sports. With great power comes great responsibility.

What kind of leader would you like your student council officers to be? We learned the difference between a leader who abuses the power of his/her position and one who is a service leader. A service leader is one who helps by doing things for the community, a service leader “walks the talk.” Dr. Kent Keith says: “If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives; do good anyway.”

Our student council officers adopted one of Dr. Keith’s paradoxical commandments and decided on the theme for the year: Do Good Anyway.

Our goals for the year are to:

  • help the environment,
  • inspire others,
  • help other students
  • publicize activities quarterly
  • invite motivational speakers

We planned the calendar filled with exciting activities for the year .

Some activities will be the same and some will be new thought up by the student council officers and Dr. Riley. One activity we planned was the welcome back assembly including the officer installation. The student council will continue to operate the snack bar on Mondays and Fridays. We will sell ice cakes, fresh fruit, and assorted snack foods. We ask for your support in student council events. Have a great year!

+ PTO "Welcome Back Students"
___ Sept. 11, 2008

On behalf of the Hongwanji Mission School Parent-Teacher Organization Executive Board, welcome to the start of the new 2008-09 School Year!

Working cooperatively with the HMS Faculty and Administration, the PTO looks forward to another year of supporting HMS in its efforts to provide students a nurturing environment that encourages their intellectual, social, physical and spiritual development.

With the start of each new school year, there's always a sense of energy and excitement that fills the campus as students return to their classrooms. This year is no exception, and there's an extra special energy in the air as HMS prepares to mark its 60th Anniversary in April 2009 with activities being planned for the entire HMS Ohana.

Remember that one of the best ways to inspire your child's education is to stay actively involved in their school. As such, we encourage all our parents to participate in PTO activities and look forward to working with all you in making 2008-09 an enriching and stimulating school year!

Aloha,
Christopher Kam, President
