HMS Middle School Mathematics - Ms. Karyn Bunch

Welcome to an exciting and challenging 3 year math program based on the National Standards and enriched with the integration of 21st Century Learning Skills.  The goal of the Middle School math program is to prepare students for high school and to increase their overall appreciation for mathematics in real life.  Students are exposed to math in a variety of contexts to learn to fully appreciate its many applications.  The 7th grade team from HMS won last year’s UH College of Engineering Jr. Expo with their amazingly accurate marshmallow launcher.  This is one example of students applying math concepts in a fun and challenging way. 

Students begin to discover how to effectively use technology in their explorations of mathematics.  The classroom is set up with interactive white board capability and the school provides memberships to curriculum extensions like Discovery Education, NBC Learn, Brain Pop and Mathletics.  Students are encouraged to learn how to use the TI – 73 graphing calculator to increase their understanding of data collection, analysis, and display. 

The Middle School math program incorporates the school ESLRs and students are given opportunities to practice the Buddhist Principles when working in their teams.  As the program strives to become more global, the curriculum will include class to class interactions with students across the world.
