(WELCOME TO ROOM 4-8)

We will have an emphasis on project-based learning in math and social studies using the tools of the 21st century. The students will learn to create, collaborate and communicate with the tools used.
Google docs, Microsoft Power Point, Microsoft Word, and Gmail will be trained and used to enhance the students’ abilities to create, improve and submit their projects. Navigational skills through the internet will be necessary to enrich each student’s ability to increase their resources in fourth grade.
Supplemental textbook work will be used within the classroom.

Math
In math we will cover a variety of units. The units will range from understanding whole numbers and operations; time, data, and graphing; multiplication and division facts; multiplying and dividing with one and two digit numbers; geometry and algebra; fractions and probability; measurement and decimals; and perimeter, area, and volume. Textbooks (Harcourt), websites (jmathpage.com), and other hands-on tangible resources will be used to enhance the math lessons learned. Each trimester will have a presentation of learning in math.

Social Studies
Social Studies’ focus in fourth grade is Hawaiian Studies. The students will learn about how Hawai`i became its own indigenous tropical island with its own people; how navigation has affected the state from the first settlers until today’s modern day; the importance of native Hawaiian culture; the native Gods; the Hawaiian monarchy; ahupua`a (land division); and the importance of aloha `aina (love of the land). The highlight of social studies will be the Big Island trip in March.  Each trimester will have a presentation of learning in Hawaiian Studies. 

We are looking forward to an exciting and fun year with the fourth graders!
